COS: Constitutional Literacy and Responsible Citizenship

Since the Constitution is a “legal document,” many people have an unspoken misconception that it is difficult to understand or interpret. However, there are foundational principles to interpreting the Constitution. The Founding Fathers drafted the Constitution for the lay person to be able to understand. I am not a constitutional lawyer; however, I know more than some but less than others. I am the type of person who the Constitution was written for. I have felt the same frustration that many Americans have. About 10 years ago, I began teaching a course in Judicial Process. Through my experience in that class, I began to see more completely the judicial tyranny that has existed in America’s courts. Rather than “interpreting the law,” with the Constitution being the supreme law of the land, the courts have created law through their decisions, in violation of Article II of the Constitution that granted the Legislative Branch the sole power to make laws. The more I studied constitutional literacy, the more I became aware that responsible citizenship included being knowledgeable about the Constitution. Upon completion of this class, participants will know the organization and purpose of the U.S. Constitution, including the Bill of Rights. Through small group discussions and learning activities, participants will learn the foundational principles of interpreting the Constitution and apply these principles to existing law or pending legislation. Participants will learn how they can hold government accountable by identifying their local, state, and/or federal representative(s) and contacting that representative about a topic that concerns them. Lastly, participants will be provided with online resources to help them be enlightened citizens. Most-Important Takeaway – Participants will become enlightened citizens with the power and responsibility as to shape the future of freedom in America – in a civil manner – and motivate those in their sphere of influence to do the same.
