An investigation into an online romance scam uncovers 25 victims and over $6MM in funds fraudulently obtained from victims of romance scams and business email compromises.
In May 2019, the U.S. Secret Service, San Francisco Field Office, opened an investigation into a scheme that defrauded a Bay Area resident of $600k. The investigation ultimately uncovered over two dozen victims of romance scams and business email compromises with over $6MM in losses. The over two-year investigation resulted in federal indictments for two individuals on multiple charges of money laundering.
